What's irritating about this show is that it could have been good.
In fact, Umetsu Yasuomi has done excellent work in Robot Carnival's "Presence" segment, and there are glimmers of that genius here.
Sadly, it's only in the technical aspects of this show, as the razor-thin plot and the emphasis on blood and lurid content totally ruin what this show has going for it. Kite wants to be La Femme Nikita and Leon reborn, but the writing isn't tight enough and the characters aren't smart enough to qualify.
Let's factor in the ridiculous action scene in which Sawa is catapulted out of a skyscraper, lands on an exploding gas tanker, which crumbles a bridge and an underground subway tunnel, both apparently made of cardboard (wait, I thought Japan engineered for *earthquakes*, silly me). The ensuing explosion tosses Sawa BACK into a skyscraper, and she escapes virtually unharmed.
Really, this comes off as a shallow farce of Hollywood movies, and I can't say I enjoyed this very much at all, especially in light of the exceptional hype this title has gotten since its release.
The horrible ending seals it, since you don't even get the payoff of a remotely happy denouement (rendering the characters' survival throughout the movie completely pointless).
I find it hysterically amusing how Sawa, who is for 9/10s of the movie totally underage, suddenly looks like an adult woman during the "adult" scenes. Oops.
Lack of consistency, indeed lack of a deep plot, relegates this almost to the bottom rung. Watch Mezzo instead.
